A customer approached Lumetrics with a need to measure float glass with a physical thickness of up to 25mm (38mm optical). The standard OptiGauge II is capable of a maximum of approximately 20mm optical thickness. The customer also required a probe with a standoff distance of 150mm while retaining good angular tolerances.
Lumetrics designed a custom OptiGauge EMS with a maximum optical thickness measurement range of 50mm for this application. A custom optical probe was also designed and built to be used inside a cooling jacket on the float line so that the probe was able to be placed where the glass exits the lehr. This allowed the customer to measure their glass thickness in real time allowing them to increase yield by 2-3% resulting in a ROI of less than 6 months. Application summary from Lumetrics' Research Engineer, Don Gibson.
